Kangana Ranaut's mother Asha was a Sanskrit teacher and father is a businessmen. At the age of 15 she quit her studies to pursue sculpture making, for which her father slapped her for the first time.

Kangana's father was not happy with her decision of becoming an actress. Kangana left her home without any money. She used to live with her best friend Jaspreet, who was 10 years elder to her.

Kangana is very emotionally attached to her sister Rangoli who is a victim of acid attack. When the incident took place Kangana was taken aback, however when she saw her sister stand strong she took responsibility of treating her from best possible doctors.
Her first role was that of a male character, as one of the member for the play fell sick and Kangana was the choice for playing the character on stage. That was her first time in acting and she played a male character.

After watching her kissing scene in her debut flick "Gangster", Kangana's grandfather asked her to drop her surname.
She loves her family the most. When she became unemployed after Gangster, she went to cut ribbons and attend events just to earn few bucks in order to sustain. She knew she had responsibility of her family. She has a younger brother and sister.
She enrolled for a script-writing course in New York earlier this year but had to leave it halfway to return to India and promote Queen.
